Why Upgrade to the Motorola R7?
The most significant improvement is audio performance. The R7 combines a more powerful speaker with advanced dual-microphone processing, AI-trained noise suppression, Intelligent Audio and automatic acoustic feedback suppression. This makes it particularly valuable around machinery, vehicles, production equipment and other changing noise environments.
The larger display, updated controls, Bluetooth® 5.2 and dual-band Wi-Fi also provide a more modern platform for radio management, compatible applications and future MOTOTRBO fleet development.
Can the R7 Work With an Existing DP4801e Fleet?
Yes. When programmed with compatible frequencies, colour codes, timeslots, talkgroups and system settings, the Motorola R7 can generally operate alongside DP4801e radios on analogue and MOTOTRBO digital networks.
Existing codeplugs should not simply be copied without review. Programming must be rebuilt or converted appropriately and then validated against the organisation’s channels, scan lists, emergency functions, privacy settings and network configuration.
Do All DP4801e Accessories Fit the R7?
No. The R7 uses a different physical accessory interface and battery platform, so existing DP4801e batteries, chargers and many wired audio accessories are not directly interchangeable. An upgrade plan should account for radios, batteries, chargers, carry solutions and audio accessories.

When Should You Choose the Motorola R7?
Choose the standard Motorola R7 for demanding workplaces that require powerful audio, broad UHF or VHF frequency options, higher transmit power and advanced MOTOTRBO capability but do not require IECEx or ATEX hazardous-area certification.
Its higher RF output, larger full-keypad display and broader battery selection make it an excellent choice for general mining operations, construction sites, manufacturing facilities, transport, security and large commercial campuses.
When Is the Motorola R7Ex Required?
The Motorola R7Ex is designed for workers operating in potentially explosive environments. It carries IECEx and ATEX certifications covering specified gas, combustible-dust and mining atmospheres when used with approved batteries and accessories.
The R7Ex should be considered where a site’s hazardous-area classification or safety requirements specify appropriately certified radio equipment. Examples may include underground mines, fuel-handling areas, oil and gas facilities, chemical plants and locations where combustible dust may be present.
Important Hazardous-Area Guidance
A standard Motorola R7 fitted with a HazLoc battery does not become equivalent to an IECEx/ATEX-certified Intrinsically Safe R7Ex Two-Way Radio. Hazardous-area suitability must be determined according to the site classification, applicable regulations and the complete approved radio, battery and accessory combination.
